ALBUM REVIEW: Chiddy Bang – The Preview

17 Oct

Release Date: October 12, 2010 | AMAZON | ITUNES |

Chiddy Bang have easily become the shining beacon of hope in a new wave of sample-based hip hop. By blending samples from genres such as electro-pop and indie rock with hard hitting hip hop bass and unique lyrics, Xaphoon Jones and Chidera “Chiddy” Anamege have created a something beautiful.

Since releasing The Swelly Express mixtape back in October ’09, Chiddy Bang has been all over the musical map. EMI signed them to a record deal back in January rising Chiddy to new, incredible levels. Their mini-mixtape Air Swell, which was released on April 8th, features an official remix of Gorillaz’s “Stylo,” a remix Hot Chip’s “One Life Stand” as well as several other remixes of Chiddy’s favourite UK musicians.

Chiddy’s newest outing, The Preview, is their gift to fans who are eagerly waiting for their recently delayed debut LP, The Swelly Life. The Preview starts off with a bang with a blend of synths and heavy bass in the track “The Good Life,” which was co-produced by Pharrell Williams. Many familiar songs will be found on The Preview. Chart-toppers Opposite of Adults (KIDS), All Things Go and Truth are all present but still hold the same gravitas as they did on The Swelly Express while the rest of the tracklist brings new flavour to the experienced duo’s palette. Darwin Deez’s indie hit “Bad Day” is remixed and amplified with synth flavour and electro style that compliments the guitar heavy original perfectly. The album’s finale, “Old Ways,” is a perfect example of Xaphoon’s ability to take a sample and blend it skillfully with Chiddy’s lyrics to make a perfectly harmonious union.

The Preview is an amazing example of Chiddy Bang’s confidence as a trendsetter in a new wave of hip hop. These two have already made a name for themselves, but it’s clear they are on the path to becoming something bigger.
