Ghostland Observatory - Codename: Rondo

Release Date: October 26, 2010 | AMAZONITUNES |

It has been two years since Austin, Texas based Ghostland Observatory has released an album, and their newest studio release, titled Codename: Rondo, debuted fairly quietly. After three studio albums, their fourth outing shows that the band has gone in a new direction that is more akin to their third album, Robotique Majestique. I’m not sure whether this new direction is the best one for the band, whose debut and sophomore albums were easily their best work.

Codename: Rondo is interesting to say the least. There are several songs that are electro-dance gems and are worth continued listenings, but many songs on the album are full of strange vocals by Aaron Behrens combined with an odd assortment of beats provided by Thomas Ross Turner. Songs such as “Give Me the Beat,” “Freeze,” and “Glitter” are fun and energetic, reminiscent of many of their older songs, and the title track “Codename: Rondo is a high-energy, quirky song that features a narrator assigning codenamed Rondo to buy him a “drank.” Most of the other songs on the album, such as “Mama” don’t fit in with the rest. Several songs have Behrens’ vocals being a fairly unwelcome departure to the staple high-pitched energy that usually comes out of his mouth.

It is interesting to observe the changes made to Ghostland Observatory over the past five years. The disappointment with these changes is that the two Texans seemed to have debuted too strongly and have slowly gone downhill ever since delete.delete.i.eat.meat. All the while, if you are a fan of their music than Codename: Rondo is worth checking out and several of the songs are worth keeping on your iPod.

Rating: 6.2/10
